Understanding the New GMDSS Certification Process for 2025

As of 2025, the GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System) certification process in the UK has undergone a significant change. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) now oversees both the approval of GMDSS training providers and the issuance of certificates—responsibilities that were previously handled by AMERC.

What’s New?
Seafarers who complete their GMDSS training after April 21, 2025, are now required to apply directly to the MCA. Depending on their circumstances, applicants will need to use either MSF 4343 or MSF 4354 forms. This change aims to streamline the certification process and align it more closely with other MCA functions.

Application Tips:

  • Double-check which application form applies to your situation.

  • Only apply after your exam results have been issued by the training provider.

  • Submit your documentation electronically as per the MCA’s new procedures.
